The abuse of alcohol and other substances like drugs are something that is more widespread than most people would think, especially alcohol. People look at beer and think it's OK to have a 6 pack of beer a night...because it's not hard liquor. Try to see if you can stop drinking beer for a month and you will see how addictive it really is...it's hard to stop.
What does the bible say about drinking alcohol and abusing drugs? There is no verse in the bible that says, "Don't drink alcohol, period." And the bible says nothing about illegal drugs, since they weren't available in Bible times. The Bible does however have much to say about using any substance that harms us mentally or spiritually. It also talks about having a chemical high.
What God does not want us to do is replace him with drugs or alcohol to wash your sorrows away...he wants us to come to him. He holds the key to real healing to whatever we're dealing with. Alcohol and drugs are just a band aid and will end up in eventual failure. God's way is the best way who will bring lasting success.

Wine is a mocker, Strong drink is a brawler, And whoever is led astray by it is not wise. Proverbs 20:1 (NKJV)
He who loves pleasure will be a poor man; He who loves wine and oil will not be rich. Proverbs 21:17 (NKJV)
Do not mix with winebibbers, Or with gluttonous eaters of meat; For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, And drowsiness will clothe a man with rags. Proverbs 23:20-21 (NKJV)
Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has complaints? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes? Those who linger long at the wine, Those who go in search of mixed wine. Do not look on the wine when it is red, When it sparkles in the cup, When it swirls around smoothly; At the last it bites like a serpent, And stings like a viper. Your eyes will see strange things, And your heart will utter perverse things. Yes, you will be like one who lies down in the midst of the sea, Or like one who lies at the top of the mast, saying: "They have struck me, but I was not hurt; They have beaten me, but I did not feel it. When shall I awake, that I may seek another drink?" Proverbs 23:29-35 (NKJV)
Woe to those who rise early in the morning, That they may follow intoxicating drink; Who continue until night, till wine inflames them! Isaiah 5:11 (NKJV)
Woe to men mighty at drinking wine, Woe to men valiant for mixing intoxicating drink, Who justify the wicked for a bribe, And take away justice from the righteous man! Therefore, as the fire devours the stubble, And the flame consumes the chaff, So their root will be as rottenness, And their blossom will ascend like dust; Because they have rejected the law of the LORD of hosts, And despised the word of the Holy One of Israel. Isaiah 5:22-24 (NKJV)
Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. Romans 13:13 (NKJV)
And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, Eph 5:18 (NKJV)
