It's easy to lie or withhold some crucial facts. Sometimes we can justify a small lie by thinking that we don't want to hurt someones feeling. Let's say that your wife asks you if a specific dress makes her look fat. Most people would say that lying about that would be OK...the bible is clear...it's wrong. Actually, you just say that she looks better in black or navy. Frankly, I think that God was talking more about lies that are designed to deceive and cover up ones failure or greed. Lying hurts people, it puts the wrong people in jail, it divides families.
The Bible takes lying so seriously that it is one of the Ten Commandments... "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. Ex 20:16 (NKJV)
Dishonest scales are an abomination to the LORD, But a just weight is His delight. Proverbs 11:1 (NKJV)
The truthful lip shall be established forever, But a lying tongue is but for a moment. Proverbs 12:19 (NKJV)
A man who bears false witness against his neighbor Is like a club, a sword, and a sharp arrow. Proverbs 25:18 (NKJV)
Certainly not! Indeed, let God be true but every man a liar. As it is written: "That You may be justified in Your words, And may overcome when You are judged." Romans 3:4 (NKJV)
Do not be a witness against your neighbor without cause, For would you deceive with your lips? Do not say, "I will do to him just as he has done to me; I will render to the man according to his work." Proverbs 24:28-29 (NKJV)
He who walks with integrity walks securely, But he who perverts his ways will become known. Proverbs 10:9 (NKJV)
The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom, But the perverse tongue will be cut out. Proverbs 10:31 (NKJV)
Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, Colossians 3:9 (NKJV)
