In general people worship money instead of God. If money is your focus, true success will elude you. I've made enough money in my life to know that money does not make you happy. Money is important, however, when it becomes our focus, we will eventually fail and we'll end up disappointed. The popular notion "greed is good" is reflective of worldly wisdom and not the word of God. The bible confirms the position that money doesn't satisfy. You don't even have to have much to have it control your thoughts and focus.
The rich and the poor have this in common, The LORD is the maker of them all. Proverbs 22:2 (NKJV)
Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, But righteousness delivers from death. Proverbs 11:4 (NKJV)
He who trusts in his riches will fall, But the righteous will flourish like foliage. Proverbs 11:28 (NKJV)
Better is a little with the fear of the LORD, Than great treasure with trouble. Proverbs 15:16 (NKJV)
He who mocks the poor reproaches his Maker; He who is glad at calamity will not go unpunished. Proverbs 17:5 (NKJV)
For no sooner has the sun risen with a burning heat than it withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beautiful appearance perishes. So the rich man also will fade away in his pursuits. James 1:11 (NKJV)
He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver; Nor he who loves abundance, with increase. This also is vanity. When goods increase, They increase who eat them; So what profit have the owners Except to see them with their eyes? The sleep of a laboring man is sweet, Whether he eats little or much; But the abundance of the rich will not permit him to sleep. There is a severe evil which I have seen under the sun: Riches kept for their owner to his hurt. But those riches perish through misfortune; When he begets a son, there is nothing in his hand. As he came from his mother's womb, naked shall he return, To go as he came; And he shall take nothing from his labor Which he may carry away in his hand. And this also is a severe evil--Just exactly as he came, so shall he go. And what profit has he who has labored for the wind? Ecclesiastes 5:10-16 (NKJV)
He who oppresses the poor to increase his riches, And he who gives to the rich, will surely come to poverty. Proverbs 22:16 (NKJV)
Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you! Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days. Indeed the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. You have lived on the earth in pleasure and luxury; you have fattened your hearts as in a day of slaughter. You have condemned, you have murdered the just; he does not resist you. James 5:1-6 (NKJV)
"No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. Matthew 6:24 (NKJV)
And the disciples were astonished at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, "Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God! "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." And they were greatly astonished, saying among themselves, "Who then can be saved?" But Jesus looked at them and said, "With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible." Mark 10:24-27 (NKJV)
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 1 Timothy 6:10 (NKJV)
Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life. 1 Timothy 6:17-19 (NKJV)
