“I have travel many moonless nights, cold and weary, with a babe inside. And I wonder what I’ve done, Holy Father you have come, chosen me now, to carry your son.
I am waiting in a silent prayer, I am frightened by the load I bare in a world as cold as stone. Must I walk this path alone? Be with me now, be with me now.
Breath of heaven hold me together be forever near me, breath of heaven. Breath of heaven, lighten my darkness, pour over me your holiness for you are holy. Breath of heaven.
… Help me to be strong. Help me be; help me…”¹
²⁶In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, ²⁷to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name is Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. ²⁸And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” ²⁹But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. ³°And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. ³¹And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. ³²He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, ³³and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” ³⁴And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” ³⁵And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the son of God. ³⁶And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. ³⁷For nothing will be impossible with God.” ³⁸And Mary said, “Behold, I am a servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her. ~Luke 1:26-38 (ESV)
I started out with a song that represents our human condition at looking at Mary’s journey. Mary was like one of us who had encountered God and the power of the Holy Spirit the ‘breath of heaven’. Amy Grant depicts Mary’s heart as troubled and searching. “What have I done?” Mary questions ‘what have I done’ to deserve this honor. You have ‘chosen me now to carry your son’. In the Bible, God breathed text the angel Gabriel greets Mary as “O favor one, the Lord is with you!” God has given Mary His righteousness like God gave Abraham His righteousness. Abraham, against all hope in his old age believes that God would give him a son and make him a Father of nations. Abraham’s faith grew giving God the glory. (Romans 4:18; 20)
Mary struggled with unbelief and fear; though she was favored by God her flesh was not accustomed to words of “favor one and the Lord is with you!” We do not know Mary except for what the word says but we can put ourselves in her shoes as Amy Grant has done. Mary was greatly troubled (NIV) at his words and the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God.”
³¹And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.
³⁴And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”
Can you imagine what Mary must be thinking here? First, this angel complements her with sweet words O favor one; then, tells her do not be afraid, Mary; and finally she would become pregnant. Sounds like an introduction to a popular movie. So far we know that Mary is engaged to marry Joseph and now this angel of God is telling Mary that you have found favor with God and He wants to get you pregnant before you get married. Wow, we complain about our life but here Mary is given this important mission to carry a baby from God. Mary wasn’t just single out just like we weren’t just single out for God. God chose us in him before the foundation of the world. (Eph. 1:4)
The reason I think Mary was greatly troubled was she did not believe she was favored by God. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23) And because we all fall short we struggle with being favored from God. Our sinful nature doesn’t recognize that word favor of God and Mary’s flesh was greatly troubled.
³⁵And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the son of God.
To ‘overshadow’ is to shelter you. The Holy Spirit came upon Mary but also shelter her as it says in Psalm 91:1 He dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. Mary would find rest and security in the arms of God.
In the song: Mary in her heart is praying that she won’t have to be alone she calls to God. “Be with me now, be with me now”¹ Mary is frighten and asks God to lighten her darkness. Mary is struggling with the human condition called unbelief and she asks God the ‘breath of heaven’ to “pour over me your holiness for you are holy.”¹ Mary without the Holy Spirit is without direction and conviction. We need God to man our lives so we can have the faith, belief, and the drive to keep our walk going towards the ultimate prize. (Phil. 3:14) We are nothing without God that is why Mary was praying for help. “Help me to be strong, help me be.”¹ Mary wanted God to help her ‘be’ to exist; to be her all in all. Mary felt the task ahead would be impossible and her prayer was “you will hold me together ‘be’ forever near me breath of heaven”¹. She is looking to God to work through her and canvas her in. The song says ‘pour over me your holiness for you are holy¹’. Mary had the constant flow of the power of the Most High God over her sustaining her through many a battle.
³⁷For nothing will be impossible with God.”
Elizabeth, her cousin is no longer barren and is with child; with God all things are possible. This good news that cousin is with child changes everything; from that moment on Mary’s belief grew. Only God could make her cousin pregnant so this angel is a messenger from God not to be fear but embraced. ³⁸And Mary said, “Behold, I am a servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”
Mary submitted to God’s will for her life and the direction that she will follow as a servant of the Lord. In another dialogue between Samuel and God; Samuel did not know God and did not realize He was calling him until Eli said as much. ¹°The LORD came and stood there calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” (1Samuel 3:2-10) The Lord used Samuel as a prophet for his people Israel to do impossible things.
Is the Lord calling you to service? Do you say, “Speak, for your servant is listening; or do we bring in the human element of unbelief. How can I walk this path that you have set before me?
You cannot walk this way on your own. Mary, Abraham and Samuel all needed God to make a way for them. God has made a way with the birth of His son Jesus Christ who grew to be a man…took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. ⁵But, he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. (Isaiah 53:4, 5) The Lord was our substitute He paid the price of death for our sins. The death and resurrection of Christ brought us peace with God. So, fear be gone I belong to Jesus Christ. The Lord sent me a helper in the Holy Spirit to ‘help me be strong, help me be, help me breath of heaven hold me together to be forever near me breath of heaven.’¹ God’s way: for the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. (Matthew 7:14)
If, you struggle with fear and doubt maybe you truly don’t know the Lord. Do you have unforgiveness in your heart because the Lord can’t forgive you until you forgive others? (Ephesians 4:32)
Have you found that one thing that will lay your heart at rest? Are you resting in the shadow of the Almighty?
Come all who are cold and weary and find rest in the arms of Jesus Christ. (Is. 40:31) He will heal your broken hearts and bind up your wounds and set you free. (Psalm 147:3; Isaiah 61:1; Luke 4:18-19)
Pray this prayer with me and forgive and believe on Jesus Christ.
“Heavenly Father, have mercy on me, a sinner. I believe in you and that your word is true. I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of the living God and that he died on the cross so that I may now have forgiveness for my sins and eternal life. I know that without you in my heart my life is meaningless.
I believe in my heart that you, Lord God, raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Please Jesus forgive me, for every sin… (name each one to the Father) I have ever committed or done in my heart, please Lord Jesus forgive me and come into my heart as my personal Lord and Savior today. I need you to be my Father and my friend.
I give you my life back and ask you to take full control from this moment on; I pray this in the name of Jesus Christ.” Amen.
Thank you Father for Mary’s faith in you, that brought your son Jesus into the world to save us from destruction. Thank you Father that Jesus Christ is the hope that we all need to survive ‘in a world as cold as stone’.¹
Dear Heavenly Father
I pray for this coming year that we will take more chances, walk faithfully, listen to God’s voice, and pray for help along this journey that is not meant to be alone. Let us holdfast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithfull². OLord delivers us from our own hand, so that all kingdoms on earth may know that you alone, O Lord, are God³.In Jesus Christ name I pray. Amen.

I was raised in a large family and came to know the Lord after Jesus confronted me that He didn't know me. I realized I had sin on my heart where unforgiveness reign and I repented and believe on Jesus Christ. I have a passion for the lost children of the Lord because I am the worse. My favorite verse is: Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck and write them on the tablet of your heart. Proverbs 3:3 I am single and waiting. I enjoy long walks, swimming, window shopping, classic movies, church family, renew group and writing. Enjoy! I want to be like Elijah the prophet who was zealous for God. Who ran the race without quitting and giving up. To see all articles by MaryAnn Click Here!
