We focus a lot online advertising.  Make no mistake, offline ads are very affective as well and there is a lot less
competition nowadays in the home business area.  

PRINT FUNDAMENTALS
There are several important factors to a successful campaign.  Some of these rules are similar to what's
important in online advertising as well.

AD LAYOUT
I had the pleasure to work with one of the foremost experts in the field of direct mail/database marketing.  His
name is Jay Engstrom.  He currently owns a very successful marketing company called
DBM Group.  One of
point he drove home to us over and over again was the importance of the header.  You need at least 1/4 to 1/3
of the top of the page for the header with lots of white space around it.  If the header gets your attention,
people will read the rest of the ad even if it's written in 6 point type.

One of the exercises he had us do is take out design and flash is in front of a person who had nothing to do
with advertising (like the secretary) for 2 or 3 seconds and see if that person knew what the ad was about.  2
seconds is about what you have to get someone's attention.  In 2 seconds, the person will have to know what
the ad is about and be interesting enough to draw that person into the rest of the body of the ad.

TARGETING
The targeting would be similar as in online advertising.  You'd be looking for someone who is interested in
making extra money or want have their own home business.

With magazines, you would look for the ones that focus on Business Opportunities like:
Home Business Magazine, Home Business Connection, etc.  With Newspapers you want to be in the Business
for sale or Business Opportunity Section.  With Direct Mail, getting a fresh list of names would be key.  

OFFER OR INCENTIVE
When advertising business opportunities, an offer would help with data capture.

CONSISTENCY
That part usually is one of the most overlooked aspects of advertising in general and the lack of it could give
you only so so results.  Just remember that it takes 6 impressions or more for people to start recognizing your
brand.

PRINT MEDIA OPTIONS

Let's take a look at the different print options you
have available:
  • Direct Mail
  • Magazine Ads
  • Newspapers & Weekly Periodicals
  • Fliers & Sizzle Cards & Business Cards
  • Other

DIRECT MAIL
Direct mail could be used in two ways.  The first
is as a follow-up with someone you talked with.  
Second, as an alternative way to mail to business
opportunity seekers as a solo mail piece (fresh
list is a must).  There are also card deck mailing
"Opportunity Seekers" card deck (with 50 other

Individual mailing can be turned around fairly quickly, however card decks could have a lead time of 2 to 3

MAGAZINE ADS
There are several business opportunity related magazines like Home Business Magazine, Home Business
Connection, Money Making Opportunities, etc.  Also important to note is that most of these publications have
an online advertising option as well for quicker turnaround.  Expect about a 2 to 3 month lead time for most
magazines form order to print.

NEWSPAPERS & WEEKLY PERIODICALS
Are a very good place to advertise and offer a pretty quick lead time form ordering to print in 3 to 5 days for
daily publications.  A week or two lead-time for weekly publications.

Newspapers are not cheap, especially when you consider that you have to be consistent, running for at least 3
to 4 weeks at a time.

FLIERS & SIZZLE CARDS & BUSINESS CARDS
These techniques can be very effective and cost fairly little when you place them at high traffic areas and areas
like your grocery store, the church, the liqueur store, restaurants and places where people look for work etc.  A
more aggressive way to go about it is to hand your card out to people personally.

OTHERS
That could include church bulletins, billboards, pens.  If you're driving a lot, you could have a magnetic sign on
the side of your car.  You get great exposure and you can write off your car as a business expense (call your
accountant for details...some limitations and exceptions may apply).  There are some many creative ways to
market yourself.
